The Unpolished Barn Located in Downeast Maine, specializes in distressed signs and home décor that bring rustic charm to homes, hotels, short-term rentals, restaurants, and vacation properties from coast to coast.

 Each of our signs is carefully cut, painted, and hand-distressed in our Maine workshop, giving it the timeless, weathered look of a piece that has been around for generations. We never rush the process — true hand-distressing takes time, skill, and attention to detail.

 Many people are surprised to learn that the wood we use is new, carefully selected lumber, not reclaimed or aged barn wood. I personally inspect every piece at the lumber yard, choosing boards with the grain, texture, and character that will enhance the final sign’s rustic appeal. Once at the workshop, each piece is cut and paired with its design for maximum effect.

 Every sign is unique. No two are alike. Each begins with multiple stages of painting and drying, followed by my personal, multi-step distressing technique that brings out the authentic weathered charm. Custom and personalized orders require additional care, including mock-ups, sizing, positioning, and templating before the first coat of paint.

Unlike mass-produced options, every detail of our signs is hand-painted and hand-distressed. We never use vinyl decals, printed graphics, or digitally enhanced images on wood. This meticulous process creates rich textures, depth, and a tactile sense of craftsmanship that machines simply cannot replicate. The imperfect edges, layered finishes, and authentic rustic character give each sign its own personality — it’s craftsmanship you can see, feel, and appreciate in your home.

Because of the overwhelming demand for our signs and home décor, we carefully complete each order in the order it is received. Production can take 2–5 weeks, depending on the item, ensuring that every piece meets our high standards. Unlike sellers who advertise “handmade” signs that ship in under a week, we prioritize quality, authenticity, and true craftsmanship over speed. Be cautious of fast, machine-printed wood signs — they may look handmade at first glance, but they lack the depth, texture, and genuine artisan touch of a true handcrafted sign that’s made with pride.
